LODGE
Who Are the Elks?
Elk Lodges offer far more to their communities than “amenities” like buildings, golf courses, or pools. They serve as community hubs where neighbors unite, families dine together, and children flourish. The Elks are committed to enriching the nieghborhoods they serve by fostering programs aimed at helping children lead healthy, drug-free lives, initiating projects to fulfill unmet needs, and paying tribute to the service and sacrifices of our Veterans. We champion the core values of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity, demonstrating these values in everything we do.
Why We Join
People are drawn to join the Elks for a blend of personal, familial, and community-driven reasons, as evidenced by members’ experiences at the Lake Norman lodge. Individuals join to engage with their community, participate in a wide range of charitable activities, and to bond with a diverse group of people who share a commitment to service. For some, becoming an Elk was a family tradition or a way to seek social connections if you’re new to Lake Norman. Being part of the Elks means embracing opportunities to support veterans, youth, and those in need locally and nationally.
VETERANS
Mission
The Elks are committed to their mission,“So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them.” The Elks National Veterans Service Commission takes that pledge one step further, and promises service to our nation’s veterans and military members, with a special focus on service to those in need. Lake Norman Elks Lodge 392 is proud to demonstrate a steadfast dedication to our military community.
Veterans Service Commission
Founded in 1946 following World War II, the Elks National Veterans Service Commission has a singular mission to support our nation’s veterans.Though much has changed since then, the Elks’ dedication to serve veterans and military members in need has never wavered. Across VA clinics, veterans’ homes, USOs, and homeless shelters, thousands of Elks volunteers annually dedicate their time, energy, and resources to aid veterans and military personnel.
Programs
The Elks have a long-standing tradition of supporting veterans, consistently adapting to meet their evolving needs. Since our inception, we have remained a steadfast ally to military members and returning veterans. Our commitment manifests through various programs such as Adopt-A-Veteran, Freedom Grants, VA Voluntary Service, Veterans Leather and Welcome Home.
COMMUNITY
At Lake Norman Elks Lodge 392, community service is not just an event but a way of life. Our members embody the Elks’ principle of charity, dedicating their time and resources to make a difference in the lives of others.
Hurricane Helene Relief Fund
In the wake of Hurricane Helene, our Lodge demonstrated unmatched solidarity. We set out with a Hurricane Relief Fund, backed by a $1,000 matching challenge, to purchase supplies for those affected by the disaster. Through contributions and the Elks matching funds, we were able to amplify our support, ensuring that not a single dollar of generosity was left unutilized.
Nourishing Bodies and Hearts
Lake Norman Elks recognized the simple power of a meal at Angel’s and Sparrows Soup Kitchen. With 7 dedicated members, we prepared and served Au Gratan potatoes with ham, yielding 218 meals, plus additional food for future services. It’s a quarterly labor of love that culminates in sharing lunch with those we serve—truly Elks doing what we do best.
Largest Homeless Veteran Program to Date
The pinnacle of our outreach this season was our Homeless Veteran program, where members swiftly orchestrated the collection and distribution of Welcome Home Kits to 40 formerly homeless veterans moving into the new Eastway Crossings complex. It was a collective endeavor—proof of what can be achieved when compassion and action meet.
Elks Care, Elks Share
These initiatives are just a glimpse into the impact Lake Norman Elks Lodge 392 has had on our community. From rebuilding after tragedies to feeding the hungry, from lifting spirits to offering a fresh start to veterans, each project we embark on is fueled by our shared values and your unwavering support.
We extend our deepest gratitude to every member, donor, and volunteer. As we continue this journey of service together, we remain inspired by our community’s resilience and the profound effect of collective kindness. Join us in making a lasting difference—Elks Care, Elks Share.

YOUTH
Hoop Shoot
The annual Hoop Shoot showcases the Elks’ dedication to supporting America’s youth. Millions of children participate in this event, progressing through local, district, state, and regional competitions. Ultimately, six national champions are crowned—three boys and three girls, one from each age category: 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13. These winners are awarded a trophy, and their names are proudly inscribed on a plaque at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Drug Awareness Program
The Elks National Drug Awareness Program stands as the largest volunteer-run drug awareness initiative in the United States. Guided by the belief that today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders, the program actively engages children and teens of all backgrounds. Utilizing the network of over 2,000 Lodges nationwide, Elks members dedicate themselves to fighting youth substance abuse. Elroy the Elk, the program’s mascot, reminds young kids that hugs are better than drugs.
OUR HISTORY
The Lake Norman Elks Lodge #392 was chartered on November 17, 1897 as the Charlotte Elks Lodge #392 in Charlotte, NC. Our Lodge is the 2nd oldest continuously chartered Lodge in NC.
Our vision is to promote our core virtues of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity. Our goal is to make our community a better place to live.

ORGANIZATIONS WE’VE HELPED
In 2024 our members donated more than 1500-man hours, over $25,000 in cash and noncash donations and logged 27,592 miles in service to our community. Some of the organizations we help are:
ASSISTING VETERANS
Members assisted 71 veterans transition from homelessness to permanent housing; and provided other homeless veterans with support during the winter months. Through the Elks National Veterans Service Commission, we have given comfort to patients at the VA Healthcare Center in South Charlotte.
SUPPORTING OUR YOUTH
The members support our local youth by conducting an annual Hoop Shoot. 1200 youth participants competed for the chance to have their names enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Each year, we participate in National Night Out in Huntersville. The event is an annual community event that promotes police-community partnerships along with neighborhood fellowship. Our focus at the event is Drug Awareness.
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The Elks have a college scholarship program. Every year our Lodge has multiple winners of the State $1,000 award and we often have a winner of the 4-year $1,000 per year scholarship. The $4,000 winners then advance to the National level, competing for one of 20 $30,000 scholarships.
Our Lodge members are extremely proud of the work that we do in our community as evidenced by their dedication and empathy. Elks Care-Elks Share is on display every day by the members of Lake Norman Elks Lodge #392.
